A Paul
Harris Fellowship is available to anyone (not necessarily a Rotarian) who
donates US$1000 to The Rotary Foundation, and may be given to anybody else -
either to the donor or to some third party nominated by the donor. It is thus
effectively an acknowledgement of a US$1000 donation to TRF.
It is not
uncommon for a Rotarian to buy PHFs for himself, his wife and his family. In
fact, it is believed that in some
Rotary Clubs the purchase of a PHF is a pre-requisite for membership.
However, we and other South African
Clubs consider a Paul Harris
Fellow Fellowship to be an honor that we bestow on a person. It is common for a South African Rotary District or Club to make a
donation to TRF, thereby entitling them to purchase a PHF for bestowal upon a
worthy candidate.
This award is normally made to
outstanding men and woman who live up to the Rotary Motto of "Service Above
Self" within their community.
Regardless
of the motivation, the important thing to remember is that each and every PHF
represents a substantial donation to the Rotary Foundation, which in turn funds
many of Rotary's projects throughout the world.
Benefactors are Rotarians who include the Endowment Fund as a beneficiary in their estate plans.
