50th Charter Anniversary Dinner

The Presentation of a Paul Harris Fellowship to Dr Tromp Els by PDG Ann and PHF Beryl Bradnum

DG Brian, ADG John, President Ken, Guests, Rotarians and my fellow Anns.

We are here this evening not only to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of our Rotary Club but also to honour an exceptional person. This I am honoured to do on behalf of PDG’s Ann Toni Stevens who cannot be here this evening due to a prior family engagement.

In the Rotary year 1999/2000 the Rotary Anns of District 9320 were able to raise the handsome amount of R35000 which was, by unanimous decision, given to the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International. Through this contribution to the Rotary Foundation we were able to obtain two Paul Harris Awards to give to worthy persons. Nominations for these two awards were called for from the 46 Rotary Ann and Inner Wheel Clubs of our District and Toni, the DG’s Ann of that year, in collaboration with a select committee, chose the two most outstanding candidates.

The requirements for the nominations were that the candidates would have contributed valuable work in their community of our Rotary District, particularly pertaining to the needs of women and children - work that would have or indeed has had far reaching effects. With those requirements in mind it was hardly surprising that Dr. Tromp Els was chosen to be one of the recipients of this prestigious award for his tremendous work in connection with the development of forensic medicine as regards the scourge of rape and abuse.

We all congratulate you, Dr. Els, on receiving this Paul Harris award which you so richly deserve, for the most valuable work which you have done in Kimberley. This work we know will have far-reaching consequences in the future of fighting a terrifying form of violence prevalent in our country. Thank you from all the Anns of District 9320 for your tremendous efforts to fight this most dreadful of crimes.

I am both honored and delighted to present you with your Paul Harris medallion and the Paul Harris pin which we hope you will always wear with pride, because it will be recognised and acknowledged by Rotarians worldwide.

Thank you
